Q: Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes, all participants must be able to swim 50 metres (two lengths of a normal swimming pool or one length of an olympic pool).

Q: Do I need my own equipment?

Surfboards and wetsuits are included in the price and are provided by Poloca Surf. You can bring your own equipment, but this does not affect the cost of a surf lesson.

Q: What level of surfer am I?

Beginner level 1 I've never surfed. Beginner level 2 I can get to my feet and ride white water waves (broken waves) under control. Intermediate 1 I can get up to my feet ride white water waves, paddle out and sometimes catch unbroken waves. Intermediate 2 I can paddle out, catch unbroken waves riding right and left hand waves, trimming across the wave Advanced 1 I can do all of the above and do a basic bottom turn Advanced 2 I can do all above and bottom turns and top turns Expert I can do all the above and I am linking turns and performing cut backs

Q: What to expect on your first surf lesson?

During your first surf lesson, you can expect to learn the basics of surfing, including how to properly paddle, pop up, and ride a wave. Your instructor will start by teaching you these skills on the beach, where you'll practice the proper technique for paddling and popping up on a foam board. Alongside this you will learn some theory into conditions and equipment, such as how to control the board safely, and water conditions. Once you feel comfortable with these skills, you'll head out into the water to practice catching and riding small, whitewater waves. Your instructor will be there to provide guidance and support, and will help you with any corrections or adjustments you need to make. It's important to note that your first surf lesson might be a bit frustrating as you may not catch a wave or stand up on the board, but it's normal and don't give up! It takes time and practice to learn how to surf. It's also important to have a good attitude and an open mind, as learning to surf can be challenging but also rewarding and fun.
